Edited and introduced by Patrice Giasson, with a foreword by Miguel León Portilla, this publication is the first Spanish translation of Joseph Marius Alexis Aubin’s study Mémoires sur la peinture didactique et l’écriture figurative des Anciens Mexicains (Paris: Imprimerie nationale, 1884). Aubin (1802–1891), who arrived in México in 1830 to conduct astronomical research, soon became a passionate collector of ancient manuscripts, and later devoted his life to their study. His book is an epigraphic and iconographic study of Mexican Pre-Hispanic codices from the holding of the Bibliothèque Nationale of Paris. It is considered one of the first studies on Nahuatl glyphic writing systems.
