Virtual exhibition
CERMA-EHESS, Nuevo Mundo Mundos Nuevos, no. 6 – Paris
This exhibition explores the work of Mexican contemporary artist Ariosto Otero, who has dedicated his life to paint, and carve, murals. His work can be seen in the Magdalena Contreras neighborhood (Mexico City), where he resides, and in other important locations across the city, including the popular market of San Angel, and in the market of La Merced, and governmental buildings such as the National Union of Workers (Sindicato Nacional de Trabajadores) and the “Salón Revolución” from the Ministry of the Interior (Gobernación). Faithfull to his muralist ancestors that emerged after the Mexican Revolution and exported the tradition worldwide, Otero has created murals across the Americas, in places like Bogotá (Colombia), Buenos Aires (Argentina), and in Paraguay. Otero, also gave numerous lectures and workshops, and held for years the title of president of the “Latin American Union of Muralists and Creators of Monumental Art” (Unión Latinoamericana de muralistas y creadores de arte monumental), making him one of the most important spokespersons of the genre.
This virtual exhibition, presented in both French and Spanish, explores the work that Ariosto Otero has realized between the 1990’s and at the start of the new millennium. The exhibition was created by Patrice Giasson, in 2006, for the electronic journal Nuevo Mundo Mundos Nuevos (CERMA-EHESS, Paris), following a year of fieldwork and interviews with the artist in Mexico City
