Neuberger Museum of Art
Destination Latin America offered a multifaceted, didactic journey through twentieth- and twenty-first-century Latin American art. Drawn from the collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art, the exhibition was organized in five sections. The first included work by artists affiliated with the artistic revolution that emerged after the Mexican Revolution; section two featured sculpture and painting by key South American artists exploring color, form, space, and motion; section three featured work by Caribbean and South American artists inspired by African art, Surrealism, and Magical Realism; section four addressed the challenges faced by artists living under the dictatorships of the 1960s, 70s, and 80s, when most of South America was under military control; and section five concentrated on contemporary artists looking at themes of history, globalization, violence, and social criticism.
Curated by Patrice Giasson, with the curatorial assistance of Marianelly Neumann, Annabel Rhodeen, and Carmelita Diaz, Destination Latin America: Modern and Contemporary Latin American Art from the Collection of the Neuberger Museum of Art traveled to the South Bend Museum, Indiana, November 1–December 30, 2018; LSU Museum of Art, Baton Rouge, Louisiana, October 24, 2019–February 8, 2020; and Museum of the Shenandoah Valley, Winchester, Virginia, September 2, 2022–January 8, 2023.
